Course Description: This course provides an up to date and in depth review of cardiovascular and pulmonary (CVP) pathophysiology for the commonly seen CVP diagnoses. Clinicians will understand how to determine and recognize severity of disease and how that impacts Physical Therapy (PT) interventions. Participants will learn common CVP diagnostic tests: why tests are performed, how to interpret these tests and how to apply results to PT interventions. You will acquire examination and treatment approaches for adult CVP patients including primary and secondary prevention for CV diseases, PT interventions for patients with CVP diseases, airway clearance techniques and breathing exercises. The new Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPG) for the treatment for venous thromboembolism (VTE) will be presented in case study format to allow for direct implementation. This course also provides a comprehensive study of how CVP outcome measures can be utilized to assist with exercise prescription, case management, discharge recommendations, assessment of deficits, and progression of the treatment plan. Content is based on evidence; clinical tips will be assimilated into all course material to allow direct application to daily patient care experiences.

Course Description: Do you work in an outpatient clinic or in Home Health and see patients with cardiovascular and pulmonary (CVP) disease? As the population ages, these diseases are more and more common. CVP diseases can be difficult to manage and can interfere with the treatment plan by limiting participation or preventing the patient from successfully working toward goals. This course provides an up to date pathophysiology review for the commonly seen CVP diseases. Course Description: 1 in 3 female deaths each year are due to cardiovascular disease (CVD). Fewer women than men survive their first heart attack, and symptoms are different in women and men which is often misunderstood by both women and their physicians. Because of this, the diagnosis and treatment of CVD in women must have a different approach. However, in the typical CVD trial, 85% of the study participants are male further complicating the ability to draw conclusions on the medical management of CVD in women. Woman are less likely to go to Cardiac Rehabilitation (CR) programs and are more likely to drop out of the program than men. Thus, do CR programs designed exclusively for women benefit women patients? This session is designed to highlight the differences in clinical presentation and present the updated guidelines on prevention and treatment of CVD in women. We will discuss the risk factors, pathophysiology, diagnosis, treatment and physical therapy management of CVD between genders, particularly highlighting the factors unique to women and the impact of those factors on physical therapy management of women.
Course Learning Objectives: By the end of this course, participants will be able to independently:
- describe the gender differences in clinical manifestation of ischemic heart disease,
- explain the pathophysiology of ischemic heart disease in women,
- analyze diagnostic tests for cardiovascular diseases in women,
- articulate the medical management of cardiovascular diseases in women,
- Describe the effects of hormones and hormone therapy on cardiovascular disease.
- Define peripartum heart failure and preeclampsia,
- explain the relationship between pregnancy complications and heart disease.
- Outline the effects of stress, depression and other psychosocial issues on heart disease in women,
- analyze the barriers to access and participation of women in outpatient Cardiac Rehabilitation programs, and
- design a physical therapy treatment plan for a woman with cardiovascular disease
Course Agenda:
