COURSE DESCRIPTION:
As the population ages, cardiovascular and pulmonary (CVP) diseases increase in prevalence and present challenges to outpatient (OP) Physical Therapists (PT). Therefore, clinicians need to understand the pathophysiology of commonly seen CVP diseases and recognize signs of potential decompensation. This course provides up-to-date PT CVP examination and intervention instruction for adult patients, including: CV risk factor education, exercise prescription, and breathing and airway clearance exercises/techniques. Participants will learn the components and Medicare requirements for OP cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation, including billing and logistics. This course also provides a comprehensive study of how CVP outcome measures can be utilized to assist with case management, exercise prescription, assessment of deficits, and progression of the treatment plan. Clinical tips will be assimilated into all course material, content is based on evidence, and the course is designed to allow direct application to the Practitioner’s clinical practice.
Level of Education: Intermediate – Advanced
COURSE OBJECTIVES: By the end of this course, participants will be able to independently:
- Explain the pathophysiology of commonly seen CVP diseases,
- Evaluate a patient with CVP disease,
- Create a breathing and airway clearance program for patients with pulmonary disease,
- Analyze CVP outcomes measures, including appropriate test selection, administration, and interpretation,
- Design primary and secondary prevention programs, including exercise prescription principles and education for patients with CV diseases,
- Analyze the impact of ventilation on the respiratory muscles, and incorporate inspiratory muscle training into treatment options for patients with heart failure,
- Interpret the results of exercise tests for patients with CVP disease,
- State the purpose, goals and program content and eligibility requirements for outpatient Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation, and
- Explain the Medicare guidelines and billing requirements for outpatient Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation.
