COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course provides an up to date and in depth review of cardiovascular and pulmonary (CVP) pathophysiology for the commonly seen CVP diagnoses. Clinicians will understand how to determine and recognize severity of disease and how that impacts Physical Therapy (PT) interventions. Participants will learn common CVP diagnostic tests: why tests are performed, how to interpret these tests and how to apply results to PT interventions. You will acquire examination and treatment approaches for adult CVP patients including primary and secondary prevention for CV diseases, PT interventions for patients with CVP diseases, airway clearance techniques and breathing exercises. The new Clinical Practice Guidelines for the treatment for venous thromboembolism will be presented in case study format to allow for direct implementation. This course also provides a comprehensive study of how CVP outcome measures can be utilized to assist with exercise prescription, case management, discharge recommendations, assessment of deficits, and progression of the treatment plan. Content is based on evidence; clinical tips will be assimilated into all course material to allow direct application to daily patient care experiences.

Level of Education: Intermediate – Advanced

COURSE OBJECTIVES: By the end of this course, participants will be able to independently:

  1. Explain the pathophysiology of commonly seen CVP diseases,
  2. Analyze CVP diagnostic tests and explain how they will impact PT interventions,
  3. State primary and secondary prevention recommendations for CVD,
  4. Interpret vital sign response to be able to appropriately manage CVP patients in all settings,
  5. Create and progress treatment plans for patients with CVP diseases in all settings,
  6. Select, administer and interpret CVP outcomes measures,
  7. Perform a thorough PT chest examination,
  8. Integrate breathing exercises and airway clearance techniques for CVP patients into your plan of care, and
  9. Incorporate the new CPG for VTE into PT practice.
